Welcome
Welcome to Caer Abred: Forum of the Druidic Order of Naturalists

Druidic Naturalism holds that there is only Nature and that the scientific method is the best suited to determine the nature of Nature. This is balanced with an aesthetic response to the world that is in line with that shared by the Druid community as a whole.

Druidic Naturalists will probably tend to be Pantheist, Agnostic or Atheist, yet see in Druidry an appropriate philosophy that allows one to honour ones Land and Ancestors in a way that establishes a healthy, and ethical, relationship with them and with ones fellow creatures.

Druidic Naturalism, as it has developed so far, embraces ritual, art and celebration as effective and satisfying ways to express this secular spirituality.

Probiotic health claims unproven

I was always suspicious of those tiny expensive probiotic yoghurts, looks like I might have been right.

The food industry's probiotics sector, worth £200m a year in the UK, was called in to question today by a new European ruling that its health claims are unsupported by sound science...The panel concluded that the evidence the industry had submitted to support its claims that various food additives could strengthen the body's defences, improve immune function and reduce gut problems were either so general as to be inadmissable, or could not be shown to have the claimed effect.

I long suspected as much. I mean look at the size of the human gut, and consider all the lovely bacteria that are meant to be in it all the time (which are the reason why decomposition apparently first shows its advanced stages at the stomach area, as they start to consume the body).

And a small pot of yogurt is meant to make a serious impact on that population? Really?

Given the shit that spews out of Gillian MacKeith's mouth on issues of nutrition, it can only be a matter of time before she advocates eating it. Whoops! Who'd have thunk ... but from the other end ;)

It's not inconceivable that some bacteria can survive stomach acid -- after all, how does food poisoning happen?

I too am skeptical that probiotic yogurt could have much effect on a person with healthy gut flora, but it seems more reasonable to use it in cases where the normal flora have been decimated by something (either competition from Evil Bacteria, or just some antibiotic).
